Welcome to the Wiki for the Adelaide Entrepreneurship Forum.

Early in 2013, a group of people began mapping the support programs that exist for aspiring entrepreneurs in Adelaide. The resulting map is regularly updated and the latest visual representation can always be seen here:

Adelaide Entrepreneurship Forum August 2016
Following the substantial impact of the original Forum held in June 2013 (see below), we sought to bring a group of entrepreneurs and ecosystem supporters together to update our strategy for development of the Adelaide entrepreneurial community.

The UniSA Centre for Business Growth and Adelaide City Council sponsored the 2016 Forum. A key feature of this Forum was an address to participants from Brad Feld a founder of Tech Stars in the US and a key figure in the development of Boulder, Colorado as a thriving startup community. Brad is also a prominent venture capitalist and the author of several books including //Startup Communities// which has been a key reference for the work that we have been doing in Adelaide to develop a healthy entrepreneurial community.

The Forum identified a number of priorities for the further development of the ecosystem and as a result five new groups were formed to address these opportunities. They will focus on:
  • A 20 year outlook for development of the entrepreneurial community
    • 20 years brings us to 2036, which corresponds to the 200 year anniversary of the proclamation of the colony of South Australia. (Significantly, that proclamation specified the same protection under the law for the local native population as for the settlers).
  • Further development of the ecosystem of support for social innovation/entrepreneurship in Adelaide
  • An ideas concierge and asset register
  • Accelerated pathways to get around red tape
  • Instilling a growth mindset in our school kids
There was also strong support for a mapping of pathways for entrepreneurs.

Once again Adelaide City Council arranged for a video summary of the event to be produced.

Prior History
The original map generated a great deal of interest and a number of key stakeholders in the Adelaide entrepreneurship support ecosystem attended a Forum on the 25th of June 2013. A detailed account of the Forum is available here.

Adelaide City Council arranged for the excerpts from the Forum and Workshop to be recorded and a number of participants were interviewed. This material has been edited into a short video that helps to explain what the event was all about.

In summary:
Teams drawn from participants met between June and September 2013 to develop and champion initiatives designed to:
  • strengthen networking and relationships within the community,
  • enhance education, skill development and advice for entrepreneurs,
  • improve access to finance,
  • promote the entrepreneurial ecosystem that we already have - both within SA and externally, and
  • establish a central portal or community presence online to encourage and support participation from stakeholders.

‍Each Action Group was tasked with the challenge of developing viable strategies for addressing one of these five core themes.

Public Forum - 3rd September 2013
Teams presented their responses to this challenge in the form of proposed strategies to a much wider public forum at the Adelaide Town Hall on 3rd of September. The broader community provided feedback on the proposed strategies at this forum.

Many participants in this second Forum also posted pledges to help grow the entrepreneurial Ecosystem onto a Pledge Wall. The pledges made can be viewed here.

Entrepreneurial Adelaide - What does it mean?
Tim Waterhouse has drafted a discussion paper to stimulate debate on some of the key issues that we face in growing a more empowered entrepreneurial community in Adelaide. Read it here and contribute to the discussion.
